Usually waved off as a stopover instead of a tourist destination, a flamboyant new entry is turning heads for commuters and travelers heading towards Ba.
Sculptures of an iTaukei landowner greeting an Indo-Fijian farmer with bullocks have met with positive remarks from Ba residents and visitors to the Inter-District Championship (IDC) currently underway at Govind Park.
The sculptures took three weeks to construct and set up at the bridge end of Ba and are part of the beautification projects being implemented by the Ba Town Council.
Ba and Tavua special administrator Arun Prasad said the sculptures reflect Ba’s key agricultural economy and capture the cordial relationship between their iTaukei landowners and Indo-Fijian farmers.
“This sort of entry really shows the correlation between them and also shows travellers where Ba is. Many visitors head straight to Rakiraki and Ba misses out on those tourism opportunities, especially as we are located in the interior,’’ Mr Prasad explained.
Behind the sculptures is a brand new imposing billboard that replaces a previous smaller one which Mr Prasad says was hardly noticeable for travellers.
‘’This project is to make Ba more attractive and recognisable to travellers and we’re pleased to get a lot of upbeat feedback,’’ he added
The project is estimated at about $50,000 and includes a surrounding garden. Made with steel frames coated with fiberglass, the sculptures were built by labourers from the Ba Town Council, with a similar set up in store for Tavua.
Mr Prasad said they were keen to beautify their towns for the many visitors using the new Kings Highway.
