The Soqosoqo Duavata Ni Lewenivanua (SDL) political party submits that the name Fiji Islander be the common name of all Fiji citizens. Fijian should only be reserved for the indigenous Fijians, it said.
Presenting the party’s submission yesterday, members Pio Tabaiwalu and to the Constitution Commission Ratu Jone Kubuabola also said the party supported the Bose Levu Vakaturaga Great Council of Chiefs which should be established under the constitution.
They added that there should be an act to establish the Bose Levu Vakaturaga.
The party proposed that amnesty should be granted to coup perpetrators instead of immunity, adding that amnesty would be granted following a special investigation.
The Constitution Commission was told that military personnel involved in any coup should immediately be terminated from their positions, dishonourably discharged, stripped of any military awards and titles, and disbarred for life from taking up any position in public office for life.
They also proposed that those in active support of any coup to be immediately terminated from public office.
The Commission was also told that the party supports the notion of awarding compensation for victims of a coup..
Furthermore, the party suggested that 30per cent of women representation was to be made to the Government.
It also argued that the nomination of the President to be done by all communities of Fiji and powers should be clearly defined in the constitution.
