Vodafone Fiji Limited has issued a warning to all their customers in regard to a hoax short message service (SMS) which is circulating in the country.
In a statement yesterday Vodafone consumers were cautioned not to be lured by the message or they stand to lose out financially.
Vodafone corporate affairs manager, Shailendra Prasad, said: “We act quickly to block numbers that send hoax message from overseas networks as soon as these are brought to our attention. However, there are always individuals who will try and make a ‘quick buck’ through bogus means and scams.”
Mr Prasad said Vodafone advertises all its promotions and winners through the local media in a fair and transparent manner and that customers should disregard these hoax messages.
The message reads: ‘Congratulations! Your mobile number has won $600,000 on the ongoing Nokia Mobile Promo. For claim contact +44704256281 & email noikiaclaim@nokia-gms.co.cc .
Mr Prasad said anyone using the Vodafone platform was not subject to screening and that any interference on Vodafone’s part would be a breach and invasion of consumer privacy.
He added that Vodafone, as a provider of a mobile communications network, was committed to customer privacy.
“What gets communicated using our platform is not subject to any screening by Vodafone because of the statutory requirement to provide complete confidentiality and privacy on all subscriber communications,” Mr Prasad said.
“Customer privacy is of paramount importance to maintain integrity of Vodafone network. We do not and neither do we wish to intrude or pry into any content which is communicated between senders and receivers,” he said.
