Women’s equal access to economic opportunities and development programmes result in sustainable development says the Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni
She said her ministry was working with other Government ministries to ensure that gender issues were mainstreamed in development programmes and policies of the government.
“Women should be involved in the formulation of policies, programmes and gender should be mainstreamed into development programmes,” the minister said.
“That would enable us to identify where men and where women are beneficiaries of development programmes. Right now we can see that there is a wide gap – men are benefiting a lot whereas women are not benefiting so much.”
Dr Luveni said that there was a need to raise the profile of women in decision-making, national policies and programmes.
“It is for this reason the ministry is co-ordinating awareness programmes on the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and gender mainstreaming training to all the Government ministries and departments and we are also working with the NGOs to take the message out to the rural communities as well.”
The Minister said CEDAW aimed at eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, that they should have equal access to education, employment and economic programmes.
Through cabinet’s endorsement in 2010, it is now mandatory for all the government’s policy documents including its national strategic plans, annual corporate plans, business plans and related documents for all government ministries and departments to have data on women on them.
