The Marist Brothers family is looking forward to a fun-filled week of activities and reunion as they celebrate the 75th anniversary of the school.
Speaking to the Fiji Sun, Marist Old Boys Association president Nesbitt Hazelman said the planned celebration will take place over a period of 10 days and will wrap up in Suva this Saturday.
He was in Natadola with fellow Marist old boys finishing off celebrations in the West before they head to Suva.
“The whole celebration actually started with our annual conference here in Nadi where we discussed issues pertaining to past and future developments of the school. The school’s anniversary is a fete commemorating 75 years of multicultural education in Marist,” Mr Hazelman said.
He said the school was the first to accept students from different ethnic backgrounds providing a diversity of cultures for students to learn from.
“We have fellow past students who are here in Fiji from different parts of the world. We have students from the 50s, 60s right through to the present students and we plan to have a time capsule where we’ll put in memories from the past 75 years and bury it under the statue of our founder Saint Marcellin Champagnat in front of the current Marist Brothers High school in Flagstaff,” he said.
The celebration of the much-awaited 75th anniversary will begin on Tuesday with a march from the old school in Suva Street, through Toorak to the new school in Flagstaff where the week-long event will take place.
“The budget for the whole celebration is in excess of $100,000. The highlight of the event will be the island night on Saturday. The theme will be ‘Red Diamond’.
“We’ll have food stalls and cultural performances staged all throughout the week,” he said.
