Youths of the Muanikau Methodist Church circuit submitted to the Constitution Commission that the new constitution should uphold and protect the rights and values of all citizens and the sovereignty of the nation.
Dressed in grey tee-shirts with their circuit’s name printed on them, about 50 youths were at the Great Council of Chiefs complex in Nasese to air their submission.on Saturday.
The youths proposed that the new constitution embodied a free media, an end to the coup culture and accountability for all responsible.
They also wanted the youths of Fiji to participate in decision-making at all levels of development and nation-building.
Youth leader Sailosi Sirisirivalu submitted that provisions in the implementation of education and health programmes to prevent and treat substance abuse be included in the constitution.
He recommended that the enforcement of laws on the legal age of alcohol consumption and tobacco sale and distribution be reviewed.
The Constitution Commission heard that seats should be allocated for youths in parliament and that Government should widen and strengthen existing youth forums to encourage and empower youth participation through different mediums.
The youth delegation also highlighted a few points on the issue of democratic instability, and the absence of a constitution.
They submitted that mandatory awareness programmes be held in all institutions regarding the legal supremacy of the constitution and the democratic principles it upholds.
In closing their submission the youth group wishes that the voices and aspirations of the youths of Fiji be taken into consideration and reflected in the new constitution.
