The vicious cycle of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) amongst impoverished communities saw the launch of a Diabetes Awareness Blue-Ribbon campaign yesterday to coincide with International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The campaign was launched by NCDs national advisor Dr Isimeli Tukana at the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and development (FRIEND) premises in Ba, where hundreds of FRIEND recipients and stakeholders gathered.
“World Diabetes Day is on November 14 but we’ve launched our campaign on International Day for the Eradication of Poverty because over time we have recognised that NCDs strike those who rest many times because of the low-quality of food and also because it contributes to poverty,” explained FRIEND director Sashi Kiran.
FRIEND hopes to continue with their various health programmes, particularly with the Prevention, Restoration, Integration, Sustainability and Mindfulness (PRISM) initiative, an NGO that offers NCDs management to the country’s rural and underprivileged communities.
“Each of our programme works to ensure that we reduce the burden of NCDs and that we have healthier communities that have food security for themselves,” she reiterated.
Dr Tukana said diabetes claimed 400 lower-limb amputations a year, with some cases recording multiple amputations. He reminded people to serve their respective gods well, maintain a stress-free spirit, body and mind and for people to act their age, ethnicity and gender.
He said stress led to diabetes, hypertensions and heart-attacks.
