We all know that the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama – led Government has already approved the waiving of water bill arrears totalling $13.4 million.
Yesterday the waiver process started and the Prime Minister together with two senior citizens signed the waiver form.
The senior citizens were happy to see water back in their homes after it was disconnected for unpaid water bills.
Prime Minister Commodore Bainimarama also visited the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma-owned Ballantine Memorial School to sign the waiver form clearing the $24,000 overdue bill.
This waiver decision will help 25,000 Fijian households, businesses, schools and places of worship.
Approximately 100,000 Fijians will directly benefit from this initiative.
These consumers had owed bills to the Water Authority of Fiji for years and the decision had brought relief to them.
Consumers should be advised that the arrears will be waived on a case by case basis and subject to meeting certain criteria approved by the WAF.
We must commend the Authority for the assurance that it will also give special consideration to customers on welfare support as well as pensioners on low income.
This is really a bold decision by the government and is based on its belief that the families of Fiji come first.
The Prime Minister said: “Nothing is more important to my government than helping ordinary Fijians provide for themselves and their families.”
We must thank the government and the Water Authority of Fiji for this initiative.
Well there is a lesson behind this and that is for all those who will benefit from this waiver to pay their water bills on time.
There new water bill will be in January 2013.
Do not delay your water bill payment due to other social obligations.
We must also commend the Authority for the help it is offering after the wavier initiative.
It will be soon be embarking on an awareness campaign to better inform customers on detecting leakages within their premises.
This is the time to make good use of such a campaign especially when it assures you of your continuous access to water in future.
It is a fact that when your water meter is closed, it is only then that you know the worth of water to your family.
