A media awareness workshop, aimed at bettering media relations, was held for the Fiji Meteorological Services staff.
It was conducted yesterday by the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA). Principal scientific officer Misaeli Funaki said the objective of the workshop, which was requested by the weather office, was to ensure that all levels of staff knew how to use the media to get vital information out to public.
Mr Funaki said they were informed on the importance of using media in the right manner to disseminate information.
“Media is the vehicle that we use and we needed FMS to build up the capacity on how to handle the media. Not only are we concentrating on heavy rain and tropical cyclone, we are also looking at flood warnings and that is another reason why we need to use media.
“We as an organisation have to use the media in the best possible way in order to get the message across so that the people- farmers, fishermen, commuters can know the weather.
“We have taken a few points on board and we will be working on those and we hope to have better working relations with media,” Mr Funaki said.
PINA facilitator Matai Akoula said they were requested for a media awareness workshop.
