The Nadroga Rugby Union is planning to have a rugby carnival in a week-long celebration at Lawaqa Park on November 3-10.
Nadroga Rugby spokesperson Jikoibau Matawalu said the Nadroga Rugby Union Executives Committee together with the Nadroga Navosa Provincial Council Office joined hands upon Ratu Sakiusa Makutu- Na Kalevu’s endorsement and blessings to organise the event.
“The event is to mark the celebration as well as raising of funds to accommodate the needs of the Nadroga Rugby and its development plans.
“Rugby in Nadroga is second to religion and is the most supported and most waited sporting season in the province.
“The sport brings all races, different religion with different background together,” Matawalu said.
He added all works of life in Nadroga are centred on this sport and when it comes to crucial matches in the season the residents, the villages, and the business people take time out to watch.
“Having said the above and as far as any other sporting body is concerned, finance has always been a hindrance to proper development as well as maintaining high performance.
“It is the only provincial based sporting body in the country that has 60 affiliated clubs, each club having 40 plus registered players with an average of 3000 players under our care.
“Your presence at the grounds establishes your support, a way you can give back to those who have made our Province and Nation proud and to witness the first ever local celebration organized in a big way,” Matawalu added.
He said the celebrations would not only be for their success on the rugby arena but also for their sons and daughters that have done them proud like Olympics golden boy-Iliesa Delana,Miss Vodafone and Hibiscus 2012- Drue Slatter.
Funds raised would go towards players’ welfare, rugby development programs and infrastructure.
