The people of Sigatoka marked a milestone achievement yesterday with the opening of their first public library at the Sigatoka Town Council civic building.
Officially opened by the Permanent Secretary for Information Sharon Smith-Johns, the library’s launch has been hailed as a vital tool for school students in the area.
Ms Smith-Johns officially endorsed the library’s opening with Sigatoka special administrator Aisea Tuidraki and council chief executive officer (CEO) Anand Pillay during the Sigatoka Open Day at Saint Joan of Arc School.
Speaking at the launch, Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji resort general manager and community leader Peter Hopgood said it was a big day for the township and for the provinces of Nadroga and Navosa.
‘’Today is all about education and how we as a community can develop together and provide opportunities to our children,’’ said
Education is vitally important in this modern day and age and without education, our children will be challenged in finding suitable employment and career opportunities,’’ he said.
Council CEO Anand Pillay said they were extremely pleased to provide such a facility for students in the area and said there were plans to gradually add more books and computers to their resources.
