Operation Blitz in the Western Division has unearthed is a very serious concern for the Police Force; the common practice of people trying to bribe traffic officers.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed a 43-year-old businessman was arrested for bribing a police officer with $30 when he was stopped for drunk driving along the Queens Road at Namotomoto, Nadi on Thursday.
Kwan Yang Lee was later charged with one count of drunk driving and one count of bribery.
Ms Naisoro said the accused was alleged to have bribed the traffic officer with $30 when he was stopped and tested during Operation Blitz in the Western Division.
“He has been bailed to appear at the Magistrates Court in Nadi at a later date,” Ms Naisoro said.
Members of the public are being warned that this practice will not be tolerated.
The operation is being conducted with the aim of keeping our roads safe from those who are intent on going against road laws and regulations and anyone thinking of trying to beat the system must think twice.
Ms Naisoro said officers would not compromise the safety of others and will not entertain illegal practices because the safety of all road- users was paramount and anyone found trying to go against the system would face the consequences of the law.
