There has been a positive response from people of Waibau Settlement regarding the Filariasis Free Weekend which began on Friday. Filariasis tablets were delivered around the country to ensure that people are free from suffering the consequences of lymphatic filariasis.
Akuila Sorocakau, 48, of Waibau Settlement, thanked the Ministry of Health (MoH) for sending nurses and volunteers over with filariasis tablets because his time is usually taken up by farming and other household chores.
MoH volunteer Tuilomanivai Toganivalu covered 20 houses in the settlement’s Savutoa area. He said the instruction from the the Ministry was to deliver the medication using the Direct Observation Treatment (DOT) method.
DOT is an initiative by the MoH to ensure that people around the country take their tablets in the presence of health nurses and volunteers and the response from the people of Waibau Settlement has been positive.
“There has been a positive response from the people of Waibau Settlement. We go into homes and explain more about the sickness to the people so that they are more aware. Previously they were reluctant in taking the medication but now there has been a better response because they are now taking it under our supervision” said Mr. Toganivalu.
The Filariasis Free Weekend, which focused on the Central, Eastern, and Northern Divisions, came to an end yesterday.
