Fiji’s drowning death toll has risen to 55 after two children died on the same day at the weekend.

The drowning death toll at the same time last year was 30.

One incident involved a ten-year-old student at the Vitogo River, Lautoka, while the other victim was a six-year-old who drowned in the Waidina River in Naitasiri.

The deaths prompted a stern warning from the Fiji Police Force on the need for parents to closely supervise their children with particular emphasis on the increasing number of children under the age of ten who have become drowning victims in the past few years.
