Sister-city relation to enhance trade

A sister-city relationship formed between Suva City and China’s Shiaoxing City yesterday is expected to boost trade between the two countries.
Minister of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation and also Fiji-China Friendship Association chair, Dr Jiko Luveni, said we need to enhance trade and area of development the two countries can engage in.
“The sister city relationship that has been established really opens up bilateral discussion confirmation between the two cities in any area of assistance that is required between the two countries,” Dr Luveni said.
Dr Luveni said already seven other sister city relationships had been formed with Suva and cities in China.

Positive indications ahead
Shiaoxing Municipal People’s Congress Standing Committee director, Tan Zhigui, said the agreement was a positive step ahead.
“We have witnessed a lot of agricultural products to China under the support and attention from the Prime Minister as well as the Embassy in China,” Mr Tan said.
“One of the companies who had imported taro from Fiji has processed it into flour and eventually turned it into dumpling and has seen tremendous interest in the foods industry in Shiaoxing.”
Mr Zhigui said with that support, so many more enterprises in Shiaoxing are showing signs of interest for investment to Fiji.

Further interest
Fiji Embassy to China counsellor, Lieutenant-Colonel Neumi Leweni, vouched for the city’s interest in Fiji.
“Shiaoxing City has a lot in common with Suva and Fiji and they have the know-how, the expertise and the machinery and those are specific areas they can assist,” Lieutenant-Colonel Leweni.
“We in Fiji should derive a lot from this relationship in terms of how they do things.”

Meaningful links
Suva City Council (SCC) special administrator, Chandu Umaria, said the sister city relationship is built on cultural understanding and peace through diplomacy.
“Meaningful sister city links are an asset for any community and its nations, however, full utilisation requires skills and commitment talked about but often lacking,” he said.
A total of 14 delegates from the city accompanied the director of the Standing Committee of the Shiaoxing Municipal People’s Congress.
The delegates included director of agriculture and potential investors to Fiji in the piggery, food processing, fisheries and tourism industry.
Shiaoxing City is famous for history, culture and tourism and has managed to generate a gross domestic product (GDP) per capital more than US$10,000.
