The Digicel Fiji 7s team is adamant to seal their second spot behind 10-times defending champions and current series leader New Zealand.
This because the Alifereti Dere-coached side now knows it may not be able to clinch the 2012-2013 HSBC World Sevens Series title.
“Last season we finished in second place and this year we want to maintain that spot since NZ leads,” Dere said.
Fiji is pooled alongside Spain, Argentina and Australia in Glasgow this weekend. Dere admitted that it won’t be an easy ride.
“Every game is tough and there has been no easy game. When you look at the whole 7s series, all the teams are strong. All seeded teams had been out in the eliminations. Australia beat us in Japan, Argentina plays constructive 7s game and Spain has always given us a tough game.”
Dere said the return of captain Setefano Cakau was a bonus to the team.
“Playing in the forwards with experienced Cakau to add speed which we did lack in the last leg. We have the height out wide with Sokiveta (Vilitati) and that is another area we are looking at. Our main plan is to play the set pieces and the basics right and the team is looking forward to the last leg.
“We ask the people to show their support for the players.”
Fiji last tasted victory in the Scotland 7’s in 2009 but will defend the London 7s title next weekend.
The Setefano Cakau-captained Fiji team takes on Spain in their first clash on Saturday at 9.52 pm (FJ Time).
