A-G: Breaches break Govt’s pledge to serve public

By JYOTI PRATIBHA

Ba Town’s special administrator Arun Prasad has been sacked following allegations of corrupt practices.
The Acting Minister for Local Government, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said there has been evidence of Mr Prasad using his powers to benefit his family members.
“There is incontestable evidence that has emerged that Mr Prasad obtained waivers and discounts on rates he and his family owed for properties,” the Attorney-General said in press statement released yesterday.
“Mr Prasad has abused his position for personal gain and has often and repeatedly acted in a manner unbecoming of a public officer.
“These breaches in conduct are in direct contravention to the Bainimarama Government’s commitment to serving the members of the public with the utmost integrity, transparency, and courtesy.”
Last week, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum had stepped in to stop the forced eviction of Fijians living in Clopcott squatter settlement in Ba, where it is alleged that Mr Prasad had threatened to cut off their water and electricity if they did not vacate the area.
His sacking also comes following the removal of the Nadi and Sigatoka special administrator, Aisea Tuidraki, and chief executive officer of the Nadi Town Council, Nemia Tagi.
Mr Tuidraki and Mr Tagi are being investigated by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
When the Fiji Sun contacted Mr Prasad last night he said all decisions he had taken regarding the development of Ba Town were done following approval of the former Local Government Minister, Colonel Samuela Saumatua.
He says the developments in Ba speaks for itself.
“I am proud of what I have been able to achieve for my town. All rates discounts that had been given, was done through the approval of the Ministry,” Mr Prasad said.
“I have worked seven days a week for this town and the developments here speaks for itself.”

NEW APPOINTMENTS
Ba’s longest serving mayor, Praveen Bala, returns to the office today as the special administrator Ba and Tavua to replace Mr Prasad.
He had served as Ba’s mayor for 12 years. He is currently the special administrator of Lautoka City.
Returning to the Nadi Town Council is Robyn Ali.
Mr Ali has accepted the appointment as special administrator of Nadi.
He was the town clerk/chief executive officer for Nadi from 1991 to 2009.
Mr Bala and Mr Ali were handed their appointment letters at the Nadi Town Council office last evening.
They would comment on their appointment later, however they were focused on the task ahead.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that the interest of the residents of Ba and Nadi would be better served with the new appointments.
“Mr Bala, as a previous mayor of Ba Town, is well versed with the needs and challenges of the town. Mr Ali is a former CEO of the Nadi Town Council and has decades-long proven track record as a local government administrator,” the Attorney-General said.
