Papua New Guinea treasurer Don Polye presented  K386 million (US$149 million or $FJ277m) as the 2013 Supplementary Budget for investment in the 2015 Pacific Games.
Polye said it was important that Games facilities met world standards. He said they should be completed by March 2015 to cater for more than 3000 visiting athletes from 22 South Pacific nations competing in 28 sports from July 4-18.
“The 2013 Supplementary Budget is a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to ensuring that the 2015 Pacific Games is a memorable event for our visitors and the people of Papua New Guinea,” Poyle told The National.
“The results are and will be out there for everyone to see.”
1991 South Pacific Games chairman Bart Philemon, who spearheaded PNG’s most-successful Games ever at a cost of K30 million ($FJ21m), said it was important that facilities and athletes were prepared in time for the 2015 Games at Port Moresby.
“We won 94 medals which is the most medals won ever since the Games started.
“We’ve got about 18 months to go. We can’t afford not to have the games village ready in time,” he said.
