Suva ratepayers are reminded that there will not be any extension to the discount offer of 10 per cent for all rates in arrears.
Suva City Council’s chief executive officer, Bijay Chand said since Friday was the last day of the discount offer, they were now calling on ratepayers to pay up by the end of February.
“The 10 per cent discount offer has ended. However, there is another chance for ratepayers to pay up and get five per cent discount for the month of February,” Mr Chand said.
“After February interest will be charged. So those who missed the 10 per cent discount offer can take this opportunity and benefit from the offer.”
Meanwhile, Mr Chand thanked all those who have cleared their rates with the council.
“By next week we will know the actual figure of arrears and how many have paid as well as the names of those who will face penalties,” Mr Chand said.
“We are also calling on people to clear their arrears to avoid fines and penalties.”
The council is requesting people to pay up and benefit from the discount offers and those with arrears are advised to clear them.
Names of defaulting ratepayers will be loaded onto the Data Bureau and will appear in the local dailies.
If need be, the council will take legal action by taking the matter to court.
The city council wants ratepayers to pay their arrears to avoid an 11 per cent interest charge and legal actions.
