A four- year old girl is dead, her older sister and parents are in the hospital, after they were struck by a vehicle outside their church in Suva.
They were going down the church driveway to their car parked on Varani Street, Laucala Bay,  after attending mass when the four-wheel drive vehicle hit them from behind.
Family members were reluctant to provide any details of the family saying they wanted to preserve their privacy.
It is believed that another Church member in his 80s was driving the vehicle.
The girl died at the scene of the accident. Her six-year old sister was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital and is now under observation in the Intensive Care Unit while their parents are admitted in the Acute Ward in a stable condition.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said the driver of the vehicle lost control of the car while coming down the driveway.
The witness said the car travelled down the driveway at a very high speed before hitting the family  who were on their way to their car which was parked below the driveway.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Police Force’s director traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra, has called on people to respect  all users.
“The public needs to take heed of measures while on our roads and especially drivers need to change their behaviour and attitudes when using the roads.”
SSP Mishra also pleaded to relevant authorities to get on board to ensure that the safety of the people was important.
He added that investigations were underway while they were awaiting a post- mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
The road death toll now stands at six compared to seven for the same period last year.
