Nadi’s Wailoaloa Beach will be abuzz this Saturday with over 50 runners expected to take part in an event organised by the Jet Runners Club of Nadi.
Club president, Abhinesh Kumar, says this is the first ever beach run in Fiji and will certainly not be the last.
“We have planned this race to attract more runners in a bid to stay healthy and fit. This will also be a fun day for the runners and parents,”Kumar said.
“The race will be divided in four categories; 1 kilometre, 2km, 3km and 4 km.
“Running is not only for athletes but for everyone and this is the message the club aims to portray to the public.”
The club will have mountain running and road relays to be introduced later this year.
“There are international competitions involving mountain and beach running and Fiji can produce champion runners,”he said.
“We have quality runners and with the right support, could become regional and maybe even international champions.’
Young runners Avikash Lal and Ravneel Kumar are among the favourites.
Bimlesh Kumar, 38, who won  five silver medals and one bronze medal during the Oceania Cross Country Championships in Melbourne, Victoria last month, will also take part.
“Our runners are making the club and themselves proud at local and international meets. We are also looking forward for business-houses to support our events,’’ Kumar added. The beach run starts at 8am.
