Close to 2000 tourists, on the Sun Princess cruise liner, swarmed over the town of Savusavu last Saturday.
They were entertained by local singers and tourist guides while sightseeing in the hidden paradise town.
The special administrator of Labasa /Savusavu, Vijay Chand, said the total number of tourists who visited Savusavu were 2400, including the crew.
“Saturday was a very busy day especially for business. Savusavu Town was crowded with tourists.”
Mr Chand said they were expecting the liner yesterday (Sunday) but because of bad weather in the Western Division it headed straight for Savusavu.
“But it was not last minute for us, we were prepared and handicrafts sellers and business people in Savusavu were all informed before the ship came in.”
Mr Chand said tourist arrivals from cruise liners had been a positive contribution to the town’s economy.
“We welcome these cruise liners to our shores and hope that they keep coming,” he said.
He said it was of a great benefit to business people and taxi drivers.
The streets of Savusavu were really crowded and tourists went about purchasing items and visiting places seen on websites.
“We hope that this will be a better year for Savusavu in terms of tourism and more cruise ships come in.”
