A family is grieving the death of a one-year and six months old baby boy who died in a house fire at Tivi Place, in Kinoya, Nasinu yesterday.
Abhay Chand, a witness, said the fire spread quickly despite initial efforts by the family members to put out the fire.
“There was so much fire and this is probably the most tragic event any family can endure and it was very unfortunate that there was nothing we could do,” Mr Chand said.
National Fire Authority chief executive, John O’Connor, said they received a call at about 2.25pm and the firefighters were at the scene at 2.35pm.
“When the firefighters arrived at the scene the house was fully engulfed in flames,” Mr O’Connor said.
He said the firefighters managed to save half of the three- bedroom concrete house.
Some neighbours had allegedly seen children playing with firecrackers before the fire, however the NFA had yet to determine the cause of the fire. Mr O’Connor said their investigations have started.
About 20 houses have been destroyed by fires so far compared to 25 for the same period last year.
