The Suva City Council has started prosecuting home owners found to be negligent of the dengue warnings and having items containing mosquito larva in their compounds.
This was confirmed by SCC chief executive officer Bijay Chand yesterday.
Three home owners around Suva have been prosecuted for not heeding the warning.
“We have started to prosecute home owners of residents found to be negligent and not destroying mosquito breeding places,” Mr Chand said.
“We will not tolerate anymore negligence from the public’s part as everyone has a role to play.”
He said the council was touring industrial areas and surveying the properties to ensure that everyone was doing their part in this fight.
“Dengue is everyone’s concern and we are doing our part and as for the homes, the onus is on the residents to do their bit and keep the compound clean,” Mr Chand said.
“As for those whose owners are overseas we are taking the responsibility to clean the compounds ourselves as it becomes our responsibility to keep the neighborhood safe. We kindly request everyone to do the right thing.”
The council is advising residents in Suva to put all useless items which are collecting water on the roadside for collection as the garbage trucks are going around collecting rubbish.
Meanwhile, the Lami Town Council has taken a door-to-door appeal to raise the alarm about the deadly disease.
Town administrator Jasper Singh said the council has finished with the insecticide spraying and now going round in settlements to raise awareness.
The municipalities are calling on the public to take extra precautions during this period and to ensure that basic sanitary and hygiene practices are maintained.
