Court told of the Reverend Waqairatu’s death

The lawyer representing the late Methodist Church president, Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu, yesterday told the Suva Magistrates Court of his untimely death.
Filimoni Vosarogo told Magistrate Hettiwattage Somaratne that Reverend Waqairatu died last week but the lawyer said he would continue to represent Reverend Ame Tugauwe in court.
Reverend Tugauwe is charged alongside Reverend Tomasi Kanailagi and Reverend Manasa Lasaro with organising and participating in an illegal meeting which was in breach of Public Emergency Regulation (PER) in 2009.
Mr Vosarogo also told the court that he also represented Kanailagi and Lasaro on the instructions of Aseri Vakaloloma.
He said the medical report of the three men charged continued to be an issue for the case.
Mr Vosarogo, is awaiting the Death Certificate of the late Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu.
Upon receipt of the Death Certificate, the same will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The state lawyer served the court with Reverend Kanailagi’s medical report as requested by the defence.
The state lawyer also informed the court that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was awaiting on a confirmation of a date for the medical examination of Reverend Lasaro from the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Resident Magistrate Somaratne adjourned the matter to March 24 for Mr Vosarogo to liaise with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions regarding the Death Certificate of Reverend Tuikilakila Waqairatu and for the state lawyer to follow up with the medical examination for Reverend Lasaro.
All accused persons are excused from attending court on the next call date.
