The Ministry of Education has jumped on board the battle against dengue fever.
It is calling on students to put to practice at home the information learned at school about the deadly disease.
To date the 2589 Fijians have so far tested positive to the mosquito-borne disease. Three have died so far.
Permanent Secretary for Education Dr Brij Lal Dr Lal said the support the dengue clean-up campaign and urged the schools, managements, and the students to be part of the clean- up campaign to combat the increase of dengue outbreak.
“With the dengue outbreak, the ministry is calling on schools, teachers, parents as well as students to take preventative measures as the dengue outbreak is very serious,” Dr Lal said.
“We would like to encourage students to put to practice at home what they have learnt in school regarding dengue as they can assist their families to do the right thing.
“We would not want to see our students becoming victims of dengue hence it is advisable to take precautions and see doctors immediately if they are sick.”
He advised students, parent’s teachers and the school managements to take actions fast.
“We need to protect everyone from the increase in the cases of dengue fever by destroying mosquito breeding places.”
The public are again reminded to ensure their compounds were kept clean during this time, still water containers and all sorts of water receptacles, drums and tyres to be discarded.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health has started a second round of insecticide sprayings in the Central Division earlier this week.
Insecticide spraying started in the Lami, Walu Bay and Suva City areas and will continue onto the Suva-Nausori corridor.
Insecticide spraying started from February 13 and will continue until March 1.
