The Lautoka City Council is in the process of reviewing kava drinking within the market vicinity.
Special administrator Praveen Bala said serious hygiene issues could be raised from kava consumption and constant spitting by these patrons within the market area.
If the need arises, he said the council would erect special sheds for kava drinking, but this would not be entertained within the market.
“Market is the place for selling of vegetables, and many times cooked food as well. We cannot have people sitting there drinking grog and then spitting in the very same area,” Mr Bala said.
“We are seriously looking into this issue and we will have to see when we can stop people from drinking grog within the vicinity,” Mr Bala said.
This announcement has been welcomed by the President of the Lautoka Market Vendors Association, Makereta Rika.
Mrs Rika said some of these grog drinkers ended up spending the night on footpaths near the market.
“It is about time something is done about it. We agree that drinking grog should not be allowed within the market area, it is not good at all,” Mrs Rika said.
However, Lautoka Market has had very serious discussions taking place around the grog bowl, under the Sekoula trees.
Mr Bala said they were open to discussion in this regard.
