A family in Malawai, Votualevu, in the outskirts of Nadi is still coming into terms with the death of their father, who lost his life in a fatal accident over the weekend.
Nirbhai Chand, 45, a taxi driver died after the car he was driving was hit by a horse on Saturday night.
Youngest of the four siblings, Avneel Chand, 20 a student of Fiji National University, said the family was devastated.
“We got the news at around 8pm that our dad was in the hospital after he was involved in an accident,” Chand said.
“It was unbelievable, he was a very hard working man, and he worked hard to be a taxi proprietor.
“Not only that he even worked tirelessly for us four brothers to be well and be educated in different fields, over the year each one of us took the liberty to study in the tertiary education we chose.”
Mr Chand said their dad departed from them too early but left something they would cherish for the rest of their lives – education.
“That is one of the legacies he left us with. The will to strive for the best in education and of course we will dearly miss him.”
“We have lost our dad; we would love the local authorities to look into matters of stray animals crossing the roads and hope someone can be taken to task.”
According to the police the accident happened along the road side in Narewa, Nadi at around 7.15pm.
Police spokesperson, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the incident was alleged to have occurred when the driver was returning to Nadi Town from Denarau Island.
“It is alleged a horse suddenly jumped over the car, causing extensive damage to the vehicle and internal injuries to the deceased.
“As a result of the impact, the vehicle landed in the drain nearby together with the horse.
He said the deceased was conveyed to the Nadi Hospital, however, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
“The deceased’s body is kept at the Nadi mortuary awaiting post mortem. The horse in the accident also died,’’ said Inspector Sokomuri.
Inspector Sokomuri also said at this stage it was unclear whether the animal crossed the road suddenly.
The deceased was driving a taxi registration number LT 1580.
He is survived by his wife Chandni Lata and four children. The funeral will be held at Votualevu Cemetery on Wednesday, at 1pm.
