A passenger and a driver of a four-wheel drive Toyota Hilux escaped death yesterday morning after the vehicle they were travelling in hit the back of a truck on Vuci Road in Nausori.
The truck, which belonged to a farmer, was pulling out of his garage when the accident happened.
Truck driver Josaia Rasiwale said he was waiting for the oncoming traffic to pass in order to reverse out of the compound where their garage was located.
“The truck was parked inside the garage and I had one job to go and pick up.
“Another boy was standing at the gate to watch for oncoming traffic and give me signals,” Mr Rasiwale said.
He said he suddenly stopped at the gate after hearing a car putting on its brakes.
“The car was speeding, he claimed.
“A few seconds later I got a shock when the back the truck was hit and it was forced sideways towards the drain,” he said.
Witnesses on the scene alleged the car speeding before crashing and going under the truck’s tray.
The driver and passenger of the Toyota Hilux, who were uninjured, declined to comment when approached.
