The Labasa RubbishDump site is soon to be improved, to enhance the environment for people living in Labasa Town.
This was confirmed by the solid waste management adviser for the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), Esther Richards, during a meeting at the Labasa Civic Centre yesterday.
Ms Richards said the Labasa dumpsite was currently vulnerable to extreme weather events because of its location in a flood plain adjacent to the Labasa River.
“The AdaptWaste project is being implemented at the Labasa dumpsite to reduce the impacts of extreme weather events on the operation and maintenance of the waste disposal site,” Ms Richards said.
“The aim of the AdaptWaste project is to integrate climate change adaptation into the waste management sector by improving the existing waste disposal site.
“It is also important to improve the dumpsite so that it can better manage disaster waste which may occur as a result of flooding in Labasa Town, or as a result of cyclones.
“Improving the waste disposal site is also important in reducing the risks to human health and the environment from badly managed waste”.
The AdaptWaste project is being implemented in partnership with the Fiji Department of the Environment, the Labasa Town Council, and the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA).
SPREP has secured funding of AU$330,000 from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to complete the project.
“We are currently preparing the designs, and cost estimates for the improved waste disposal site.
“We will not commence work until the proper consents have been issued by the Lands Department. We hope to have these consents in time for work to commence in April,” Ms Richards said.
