The Lau Provincial Council Meeting will take place next month.
Commissioner Eastern Division Lieutenant-Colonel Netani Rika said the meeting would be held on the 2nd to the 4th of next month.
This would be a relief to the people of Lau since it was the only province that did not have its provincial meeting last year.
This was due to the unavailability of a Government vessel.
The meeting was postponed three times. It was initially scheduled for August 21-22 but later moved to October 24-25.
It was again moved to October 30-31 but the government vessel, Rogovoka II that was picking up delegations for the meeting encountered a mechanical problem.
The major purpose of the meeting is to discuss the chiefly positions that are still left vacant and the need to traditionally install those who haven’t been installed, it has been revealed.
Roko Tui Lau, Joeli Nagera, said there were a number of vacant chiefly positions especially at district level.
Even the seat of the high chief or the paramount chief of Lau, Tui Nayau and Sau Ni Vanua Ko Lau is still left vacant since 2004 when the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara passed away.
Lieutenant- Colonel Netani Rika will discuss Government’s works on the islands.
The agenda also include discussions on climate change effect on the islands, the usual transportation problem because of poor shipping service and overfishing.
Discussions will also be on the need to revive Lau’s fundraising festival known as the Adi Natuicake.
