Ben Ryan is preparing for the Japan and Hong Kong 7s at the end of the month.
“Jerry Tuwai is fast, he has good field awareness, his side-step is dangerous and can cut off anyone anytime. He is a nine-ten, which is a playmaker and a halfback,” Ryan said last night during the launch of the Fiji Rugby Union sponsorship properties at Damodar City, Suva last night.
“But, he has a problem. He is quiet and if he overcomes that in the next two days among some other things I am looking for, then he is among the top players we will look at.
“He needs to talk and talk like Osea Kolinisau. He needs to stamp his authority and talk, and talk because he is a playmaker and he communicates on the field.
“I am looking at his fitness and other areas and he has to show himself since we named him because he has competition. There are other players in the squad and they are all in the race,” he said.
Tuwai was part of former coach Alifereti Dere’s 2012 squad for the Dubai and Port Elizabeth 7s.
“I did not make the team but to be selected back into the squad is an honour. I know Ben Ryan selected me for a reason and I will not let him and the country down. I know I am fast but I will work extra hard. I want to represent my country and I want Fiji to win the series. I will work extra hard in camp to prove my selection and show the world that I am a good player,” he said while joining squad members at the Rugby House, Suva yesterday morning.
He is from Buca Village in Cakaudrove and have maternal link in Nailaga, Ba. He is a member of the Marist 7s team and was selected during the 38 Fiji Bitter Marist 7s last weekend.
The Vodafone Fiji 7s squad, meanwhile, will continue training today at the Uprising Resort, Pacific Harbour.
Coach Ryan is expected to name his 16-member squad at the end of the week. Twelve will travel while four players will be on non-travelling reserves.
