A mechanic-cum taxi driver of Tailevu has been handed a nine- month prison sentence suspended for 18 months.
Umesh Prasad was sentenced by the Suva Magistrates Court on Monday for two counts of abduction of a person under 18 years old with the intent of carnal knowledge and he has been conditionally discharged for absconding bail earlier.
The court heard that in 2011 the accused, without the knowledge of the parents, was sighted with the victim, who was then 15 years old, at a time the victim was supposed to be at school.
The incident took place on October 6, 2011 and again on October 11, 2011 where students of the victim’s school saw the victim out and about with the accused in his taxi and not coming to school. The mother of the victim was notified by the school about her daughter’s continuous absenteeism and the accused was brought in and charged. The court heard that during the time of the incident the accused was 32 years old and driving a taxi. He was the victim’s neighbour in Samabula.
The victim also requested the court that the father of their child be forgiven and given a minimum penalty.
