Plans to set up a desalination plant for people living in the South end of Taveuni are in the pipeline.
The District Officer, Jerry Ubitau, confirmed this yesterday.
Mr Ubitau said more than 1000 people would feel relieved once the desalination plant was established.
“A piece of land is already been secured in Waimaqera and Navaca area for the desalination plant. People along the corridors of Taveuni South face water crisis every day.”
“More storage tanks with a capacity of 2000 litres for proper storage will be distributed to affected areas,” Mr Ubitau said.
Mr Ubitau said they were looking at getting one 2000-litre water storage tank for one household.
“Only the areas that rely on rain for water will be supplied with water tanks.”
He said once the desalination plant was in place, all areas in Taveuni would be sourced with water.
