Weightlifting Fiji will be sending four lifters to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on July 23-August 3.
Head Coach Jo Vueti confirmed that the four lifters are Apolonia Vaivai who is currently training in New Caledonia under coach Paul Coffa, Manueli Tulo who had just returned from England last month, Tevita Tauwai and Julia Timi.
“We will be taking two females and two male lifters to Glasgow and all these lifters are our medal prospects,”Vueti said.
“Apolonia has been doing well in New Caledonia and I can say our preparation for the Games is going on well. This is good news to everybody and we still got four months to prepare for the Games but we will put together a good squad.”
The four lifters, Vueti believes will make Fiji proud.
Powerlifting
Powerlifting Fiji is excited that now they are able to participate at the Commonwealth Games.
Head Coach Iliesa Irava is excited about the good news.
“Sainimili Turner took part at the Commonwealth Oceania Championship in New Zealand last December. She came first defeating the Commonwealth champion from Canada,”Irava said.
“The frustrating thing was she was only given the gold medal for the Oceania Games and not for Commonwealth because Fiji was still suspended from the Commonwealth.
“We are all happy now and we can take part.” Fiji’s five-year suspension from the Commonwealth was lifted last week.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Tunku Imran says “I am delighted to welcome Fiji back into the Commonwealth Games family, and very pleased that they will be able to participate in Glasgow.”
The Commonwealth Games will be held July 23-Aug 3.
