The High Court in Suva has asked police to carefully guard a man in hospital charged with robbery with violence in hospital.
The man, Adriu Tuilagi, could not attend trial. Justice Salesi Temo told Sergeant Napoleoni Masau, who took the witness stand to inform the court that the accused was taken to the hospital, that “hospitals are the easiest escape routes for criminals.”
He told Sergeant Masau that Tuilagi’s case was the oldest in his diary. Tuilagi has been on the run for more than two years.
Sergeant Masau assured the court that a police officer had been guarding him and would continue to be there until the accused got better. It is alleged that Tuilagi, with others, violently entered and robbed a property.
Doctor Celia Alexandra Gusmao Dos Santos, who examined Tuilagi, said Tuilagi was suffering from severe pneumonia and acute kidney injury. The trial proper will begin once Tuilagi was fit to stand in court.
