Villagers to benefit from the project in terms of food security

Things look on track for work to start early next month on the Somosomo Hydro project on Taveuni.
This as camp site materials for the Taveuni project arrived last week. District Officer Taveuni Jerry Ubitau said yesterday that land has been finally cleared for power house materials. Sixty workers from China are expected in Taveuni next week.
“These Chinese workers will construct the camp with the help of 20 locals from the garden island.
“We are hoping the Chinese workers will start work on April 3 and this will be a one-month construction programme.
“The construction materials will be coming in slowly every week,” he said.
“The pipelines would run three kilometres from the power station and 3.5 kilometres from the main road.”
Mr Ubitau said the major concern is the transportation of materials in Nalele Bridge and the Somosomo Bridge.
He said local farmers would benefit from this project work in terms of food security.
