The Attorney- General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, highlighted the need for transparency within the taxi industry at the Fiji Taxi Association’s annual general meeting last yesterday.
He said Fiji’s taxi industry would only be stable if things were transparent and there was a need for the drivers, operators and other stakeholders to work together for the better future of the industry in Fiji.
He mentioned that there was barely any transparency even with issuing taxi licences and taxi bases.
“If you are applying for taxi bases in a municipal council then you need to know what are the specific requirements and those need to be transparent,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
“The Bainimarama government, apart from removing corruption, is here to ensure that the business processes of the regulatory industries and the Government is transparent.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also spoke about illegal operators, an issue raised many, many times.
The Land Transport Authority revealed that more than a hundred warning letters were issued to illegal operators in the last two months says its manager – legal services, Faranisese Kinivuwai.
She said they would continue to do that to those operating illegally and reminded operators and drivers that no one was above the law.
