But preparation has been progressing satisfactorily towards a September date for the general election

As the Elections Office continue to recruit staff for the September general election, it is becoming clearer that it has a mammoth task.
It is being talked about that there will be 3000 polling booths across the country and they will be one of the new and main features of this election.
This figure is huge and it will require the proportionate logistical support. As the election machine is rapidly being assembled, the Prime Minister, Rear Admiral (Retired) Voreqe Bainimarama, has revealed some details during his Lau trip last week.
He assures that there will be no cheating in the one-day elections because measures would be in place to ensure transparency and fairness. Votes will be counted in each polling station and sent to the main centre in Suva where results are verified, confirmed and announced. No one would dare to violate the electoral rules because of the rigid system of checks. The photo ID for a start will minimise the risks of fraud. All the election officials have to do is to match the photo in the register with the voter. If they don’t match then something is wrong and questions need to be asked.
In the voting booth, there will be enough officials including party agents and independent scrutineers to ensure that polling and counting are conducted fairly and comply with the standards set by the Elections Office. The PM has assured it would be fair and transparent. It will also be historic because it’s the first time we are using a common roll system for all seats in Parliament in one national constituency.
