The much awaited Electoral Decree, which is almost complete, will be released within a week. This was revealed by the Attorney- General and Minister Responsible for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, yesterday.
“We’re almost completing it, going through the final phases so we should have it completed within the next one week. Should be out within a week,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.
He confirmed that the Supervisor of Elections was also expected to be announced this week.
The Electoral Decree was initially planned to be released at the end of February. However, it was delayed because of the threat of a cyclone that month.
The Solicitor General’s office also wanted to ensure the clarity of provisions outlined in the legislation to avoid any confusion in regards to the lead-up to polling day, during and after.
All stakeholders, including political parties, civil organisations and members of the public are waiting for the decree.
The Fiji Police Force had revealed that they were waiting for the decree to determine their security methodology.
“We already have a framework in place but we are waiting for the publication of the Electoral Decree in order to know the methodology, including the number of polling stations across the country where it will determine the manpower needed,” Acting Police Commissioner Ravi Narayan said.
“The law always dictates to the authorities. We have to look at the electoral decree to determine the public law that we will be enforcing.”
