Former Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Qoriniasi Bale (pictured) , has died.
This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by his son, Pita Bale, yesterday saying that his father died at his home in Sigatoka last Friday morning.
The late Mr Bale, a native of Levukana, Vanuabalavu, in the Lau Islands was a lawyer and political leader, who served twice as Fiji’s Minister for Justice and Attorney-General most recently from 2001 to 2006. He was educated at Queen Victoria School then University of Otago, in New Zealand, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws or LLB degree in 1969.
Upon returning to Fiji, he was appointed a counsel in the Crown Law Office and became a prosecutor in 1970.
In 1979, he became Solicitor-General a post he held till 1984. In 1984 Mr Bale was appointed to the Senate in 1984 by the Governor-general of Fiji at the nomination of the then Prime Minister, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara.
He became A-G in the Cabinet, and later that year was also appointed to the newly created position of Minister for Justice.
He went into private practice as a lawyer and had served as legal adviser to the Great Council of Chiefs and the Fijian Affairs Board for 18 years.
