The Fiji Taxi Association is reassuring the nation that the services they provide are safe and secure at all times.
It was responding to media comments made by aspiring politician, Roshika Deo in the United States stating that most women were too afraid of being raped to take taxis in Fiji. The outgoing acting general secretary, Harish Chandra, said this was not the case.
“We want to assure the nation, especially the women, that our services are safe and secure and they can still bank on us for their door to door service,” Mr Chandra said.
Meanwhile, association members have also shown their displeasure. FTA’s newly elected vice president Thomas Osbourne said they were very offended by the comment.
“Nothing of that sort has ever happened in Fiji, ladies scared of riding a taxi. It may be happening in other parts of the world but definitely not in Fiji,” Mr Osbourne said.
He’s been involved in the taxi industry for almost 40 years and said females had even called him up in the middle of the night to be dropped off at their homes after night outs.
“It means that women trust us and like the service that we provide,” he said.
Mr Osbourne said Ms Deo needs to apologise to all taxi drivers and the whole of Fiji because “she was out of context.”
Sayid Nabi, the managing director of Tavarua Taxis and Tours, in Nadi, said the comment was “absolutely wrong and damaging to the reputation of all local taxi operators and taxi drivers.”
“As far as we know this has never happened in Fiji. We are trying to service the whole of Fiji to the best of our ability,” Mr Nabi said.
The association’s newly elected general secretary, Mohammed Shameem, said Fiji was a safer part of the world and cases as such rarely happened at all.
