The Vodafone Fiji 7s beat defending champions South Africa 33-26 in a thrilling final of the Tokyo Sevens at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Ground yesterday. After a shaky start in the pool games they bounced back.
The Fijians secured their second title of the 2013/14 IRB Sevens World Series (they won in Dubai) and their second win in Tokyo.
Their first win was in 2000. Fiji outscored South Africa by five tries to four.
Led by the impressive Osea Kolinisau, Fiji head into this weekend’s Hong Kong Sevens full of confidence after the victory.
Defending champions South Africa (116) returned to the top of the Series standings by reaching the final to lead New Zealand by two points after the All Blacks Sevens (114) lost to England in the third place play-off.
Ben Ryan’s Fiji sit third on 95, with England on 85 points heading into round seven this weekend in Hong Kong.
