Fiji welcomes the priority theme for this year’s Commission on the Status of Women.
The theme is: “Challenges and Achievements in the Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for Women and Girls”
Speaking at the 58th Session of the commission in New York, the Permanent Representative of Fiji to the United Nations, Peter Thomson said: “It is most appropriate as we approach the eve of the conclusion of the Millennium Development Goals.”
He said Fiji produced two national Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Reports since the signing of the Millennium Declaration in 2000. While Fiji showed good progress in achieving some of the MDGs, Mr Thomson said its national review in 2010 highlighted the need to refocus attention on certain women’s and girl’s issues that were not seeing sufficient progress.
He said in Fiji’s efforts to address these challenges, it had been guided by the need to mainstream gender understanding across the population and ensuring equal ownership of initiatives that target women’s equality and empowerment. A key step in this regard was the promulgation of Fiji’s new Constitution in September 2013.
