A unit will soon be set up by the Media Industry Development Authority (MIDA) to assess and monitor the political coverage by the media leading up to the September general elections.
MIDA chairman Ashwin Raj said this was to ensure there was transparency with their reporting. He said media outlets must ensure that fair coverage was given to all political parties and not just to some.
“It’s for this reason an independent unit consisting of people who have a wealth of experience in the media industry, but currently not affiliated with any media outlet or the Government will be set up,” Mr Raj said.
He said all media outlets have to disclose editorial policies. “I need to know why certain letters get published at the exclusion of others. We don’t want to receive complaints from people that their letters are not being published.”
He stressed that those implicated in an opinion piece must have the right to reply. All opinion pieces, he said, should be evidence-based because of their power of influence on the public.
Mr Raj said there had been issues with exit polls conducted by the media and there should be full disclosure of the methodology.
