Fiji will go to the polls on September 17 in the country’s first truly democratic elections.
Mohammed Saneem will oversee the elections as the new Supervisor of Elections. Yesterday, he resigned from his positions as Permanent Secretary for Justice and acting Permanent Secretary Responsible for Elections to take up his new post on Monday.
The new Electoral Decree governing the conduct of the elections was also released yesterday.
Attorney-General and Minister Responsible for Elections Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum caught political parties by surprise when he announced the comprehensive election package. The parties were only expecting the electoral laws.
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said after making the major announcements in Suva: “Now, it’s over to the parties.”
For weeks leading up to the announcements, parties had been clamouring for the election details. Now they have them.
