The national advisor on communicable diseases, Dr Mike Kama, said 18,969 clinically-suspected dengue cases have been reported to the Ministry of Health (MOH).
A total of 3523 suspected cases were reported last week.
“The large increase in cases is attributed to the Dengue Like Illness (DLI) surveillance system,” Dr Kama said.
He said the ministry changed from a laboratory-based count to a health facility-based count to determine the number of cases.
“This means the doctors will diagnose the case clinically and not necessarily every case.”
Dr Kama said the change was necessary because it was no longer feasible to test every case.
Dr Kama acknowledged the tremendous support of the Fiji Red Cross Society in advocacy at community level and for assisting in the clean-up campaigns.
“We thank the Australian Government for providing $1.2 million,” he said. The Chinese Embassy gave $94,000 and the New Zealand Government $630,000 .
