Fatigue took its toll on the Vodafone Fiji 7s players in the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens semifinal loss to England yesterday.
Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan admitted the shortfall after the 7-17 defeat at So Kon Po last night.
“The boys were definitely tired during that game,”Ryan said.
“They were not moving the ball forward enough and we just lost out our chances.
“England had the lead and was just too much.”
England had a brilliant start seeing an outstanding seven minutes.
A marvellous sidestep from Marcus Watson freed Tom Powell to slide over for a beautifully manufactured opening score, much to the delight of the sizeable contingent of England fans.
The usually rock solid Fijian defence was cut to shreds by Dan Bibby, the curly haired flyer gaining 20metres before feeding a perfectly timed inside pass for Watson to slide over under the posts. England led 14-0 at halftime.
England played the percentages game as Fiji was penalised for offside five metres from their own tryline. This allowed Powell to extend his record as the series leading point-scorer with a drop-goal.
Fiji struck back almost immediately through Waisea Nacuqu but it was not enough for Fiji.
England’s Tom Powell said they worked on their tactics well.
“We tried to stifle them in defence and our tactics worked,” Powell said.
Fiji later beat Australia 21-12 in third/fourth playoff.
Fiji is top seed in Pool C in the Glasgow 7s in May with Wales, Argentina and Kenya.
Fiji also struggled in the 17-5 Cup quarterfinal win against USA.
