Expect a Tacirua Transport Naitasiri rugby team represented by players from the province this year.
This is a move by the Naitasiri Rugby Union to promote and expose players like the days of the Naitasiri North Rugby Union.
The Union then produced some former Fiji greats like Nasoni Uluvula and the Namoro brothers of Ilisoni and Rusiate, Ratu Waisake Tuisese and many more before the formation of the current Naitasiri Rugby Union.
The move will also end the recruiting of elite players from outside Naitasiri but had affiliation because of work and other reasons.
Union chairman Peceli Rinakama and coach Eroni Vereivalu said this was to expose rugby talents in their province.
“We start our 2014 campaign in a church service at Tamavua Village. We have new big plans.
“We are lucky if we will retain all our players from last year because this year we will look at our own players,” Vereivalu said.
“We have our zones and we have our own weekend competitions. The Naitasiri Highlanders 10s at Nausori is to expose the talents that we have and prepare our clubs for the coming season,” Rinakama said.
“We are going for raw materials where we will get our own bank of players. Fiji provincial rugby is now ruled by employment where players are piled up by unions because of work. Sometimes some good players are hired or given work but are not used.
“We want to use and expose our own players because we want to make them Fiji reps, especially for the World Cup and give them better future.
“When we have our own players, they will play with pride and that will lift the standard of rugby. The Fiji Rugby Union sponsorship is good so the standard of rugby must improve because we are a vanua-based union,” Vereivalu said.
Rinakama and Vereivalu were at the Naitasiri Highlanders 10s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.
