The passing away of the late Archbishop Emeritus Petero Mataca is a loss not only to the Catholic Church but to the nation and all religious societies in the country.
Like a true leader, during his reign as head of the Catholic Church in Fiji and Rotuma he, together with his flock, weathered the journey together in good and bad times.
At the ordination of Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, the late Catholic leader’s advice was “You cannot serve two masters at a time.”
He added: “People cannot serve God and man.”
His advice: “Be the good shepherd who knows how to lead his flock and not hesitate to lay down his life for them.”
His advice to the Catholic flock: “Support the new archbishop at all times.”
Surely this advice would be ringing in the ears of the Catholics and they would treasure it.
The Methodist Church has also joined the Catholic Church in mourning the passing away of late Archbishop Emeritus Mataca.
Acting general secretary, Reverend Dr Epineri Vakadewavosa said: “The Methodist Church gives thanks to God for the life and work of this our elder brother; his ministry of love and peace went beyond denominational bounds and touched our lives as well. He was committed to the ecumenical movement and understood that the journey of searching for visible unity of the Body of Christ was a long road that required a patient and loving heart.”
To the nation, he contributed to moving Fiji forward and was co-chair of the People’s Charter. We have lost a humble servant of God.
Let us join our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters, in praying that his soul will rest in peace and that our Lord will welcome him into the Kingdom with the words: “Well done, good and faithful servant!. Come and share your master’s happiness!”(Matthew 25:21)
For the late Archbishop Emeritus Mataca – May he rest in peace!
